COVER1: Miles and Reagan County Square Off in First Scrimmage

MILES, TX — Two Concho Valley schools squared off in their 2023 high school season’s first scrimmage in Miles on Friday, August 11. The Miles Bulldogs’ first string jumped out to a hot start, scoring three touchdowns on three straight drives. The Reagan County Owls struggled early but overcame the slow start later in the scrimmage. All in all, both teams received crucial game-like practice as the two prepared for the start of their respective seasons.

The Bulldogs’ quarterback Hayven Book looked primed and ready to cement himself as one of the best quarterbacks in 2A Football. After shaking off some initial rust on some of his early throws, Book connected on two different touchdown passes to his receivers. Defensively, the Bulldogs shut down Reagan County’s first-string offense. Throughout the first few possessions, Miles’ defensive line got after the Owls in the backfield. The secondary broke up several pass attempts, and overall, the Bulldogs look primed for a successful season.

Miles will need a high-octane offense coupled with a stout defense in order to compete in a district with the defending 2A-State Champion Albany High School. Miles Head Coach Jason Wilhelm said he was proud of how his boys came out, but there are still several areas where the Bulldogs can improve. San Angelo LIVE! met with Coach Wilhelm after the scrimmage to discuss Miles’ performance in their first matchup of the young 2023 season. Check out the full interview below:

Reagan County had a different experience in Miles on Friday night. Unlike the Bulldogs, who jumped out to early success, the Owls struggled to get their footing on the offensive side of the ball. When Reagan County managed to move the ball, fumbles stopped several productive drives cold. It wasn’t until the Owls' No. 2 offense came into the game that Reagan County turned things around. They managed to score points on two straight possessions toward the end of the scrimmage.

Defensively, the Owls have experienced athletes that will carry them throughout the season. After the initial shock wore off on the first few drives wore off, it was Miles who failed to move the ball. The Owls flew around on defense, making several plays that shut down the Bulldogs.

The scrimmage provided Reagan County with good experience for a tough district moving forward. The Owls share a district with Christoval and Sonora. These two will challenge Reagan County for district dominance this season. Head Coach of the Owls, Kyle Brown, noted that his team needed this scrimmage as a bit of a wake-up call before week one arrives. San Angelo LIVE! Interviewed Coach Brown after the scrimmage with Miles. Check out the full interview below:
