Grape Creek Volleyball Secures First Win for New Head Coach

GRAPE CREEK, TX — The 2023 Volleyball Season is officially underway for the Grape Creek Lady Eagles, and the ladies kicked their season off in dramatic fashion on Tuesday, August 8. After trading the first two sets with the Christoval Lady Cougars in Grape Creek, the match went down to the wire. Grape Creek one their first match in five sets 3-2.

The ladies started off hot, winning their first set 25-17. The Lady Cougars battled back in the second set with a commanding 25-14 victory. The rest of the match followed suit when the Lady Eagles took the third set 25-12, and Christoval won the fourth set 25-17. It’s not every day a volleyball match makes it to the fifth set, but both teams wanted the victory.

Each team warred back and forth, trading points and making plays. However, in the end, the Lady Eagles came out on top with a 15-12 victory in the fifth set to win the match overall 3-2. New Head Coach Lea Morris talked about how important the first victory was for these girls.

“Our win last night felt like a playoff win. A lot was riding on that game,” Morris said.  “We have a completely new volleyball coaching staff [this season], and we have pushed these girls to their limit and beyond, both mentally and physically, since July 31. We still have a long way to go, but this win showed the girls what they are capable of.”

Grape Creek looks to build off this gained momentum at the Falcon Fest Tournament in Veribest this weekend. The tournament begins on Friday, August 11.

While Christoval dropped its first match this season, the fact that they kept up with a school in a higher classification than them (Christoval is a 2-A, and Grape Creek is a 3-A) speaks volumes of what the Lady Cougars can do in the future. Christoval has not had a volleyball program for long but is already making strides to be better.

The Lady Cougars' first home game is against the TLCA San Angelo Lady Eagles on Monday, August 14, in Christoval at 6 p.m.
