WALL, TX — The Wall Hawks Football team is almost done with two full weeks of practice early on in the 2023 season. Everyone has big expectations for the Hawks this season after Wall fell in the fourth round of the playoffs to Canadian with an extremely young team a year ago. Next up, the Hawks travel to Monohans on Friday to play a scrimmage against the Monahans Loboes. This scrimmage will be the first look at what the Hawks can do in 2023.
San Angelo LIVE!’s Ryan Chadwick met up with Wall Hawks Head Football Coach Houston Guy after practice Thursday morning to discuss the upcoming scrimmage. Coach Guy says that this scrimmage presents an exciting opportunity for the coaches to see how much their players have grown in the off-season.
“I think we are really happy as a staff with the progress of our team,” Guy said. “They are playing really fast. Those kids are knowledgeable about what we are doing right now. We changed some things defensively and some things offensively, and we’re really happy as a staff at the tempo that they're picking it up.”
The intensity at which the team practiced felt like the Hawks were in midseason form. “We talk every day about the speed of the game and how fast [the Hawks] play, “ Guy continued. “And that’s all we can ask for.”

Monahans made the quarterfinals in the playoffs last year, the same round as Wall before they fell to Glen Rose. Monahans also won an outright district championship in District 2-4A on its way to an incredible season. Being in 4A, the 3A Hawks face an incredible test before they start their season.
“They’re going to be a tough team. They are a quarterfinal team that brings back a lot of guys, Coach Guy said of the Loboes. “They will be a formidable opponent for us. We expect it to be a really good scrimmage, but we also expect our kids to be able to perform. We think they will do really well tomorrow.”
The Hawks make the long trip to Monahans on Friday, August 11. The scrimmage starts with the Junior Varsity at 6 p.m. and the Varsity at 7:30 p.m.
