WATCH: White Sox and Guardians Routine Play Turns Into Brawl

CLEVELAND, OH — A brawl during the matchup between the Cleveland Guardians and Chicago White Sox on Saturday, August 6, resulted in the benches clearing and multiple ejections. The Guardians Jose Ramirez and White Sox Tim Anderson engaged in a brief exchange of angry words before both raised their fists.

Jose Ramirez slid into second base in the bottom of the 6th inning before tempers flared. Ramirez beat the tag by Anderson to complete an RBI double that slimmed the White Sox’s lead to 5-1 at Progressive Field in Cleveland. As Ramirez touched the bag, hands first, he slid through the legs of Anderson in front of second-base umpire Malachi Moore. Ramirez held up his hand in the expectation that Anderson would help him to his feet, but Anderson did not. The slight turned into an angry exchange of words before the two raised fists to fight. Both players exchanged punches as the teammates rushed second base to join the fray.

“I think he’s been disrespecting the game for a while,” said Ramírez in an interview after the game. “I was telling him to stop doing that. After he tapped me really hard, more than needed, he said he wanted to fight, and I had to defend myself.”

Check out a video of the fight here:

Ramirez dropped Anderson with a right-handed hook after the White Sox shortstop threw the first punch. The would-be scrum came to an end by the time both teams reached each other, but then came the ejections. Aside from Ramirez and Anderson, both managers, Cleveland's Terry Francona and Chicago's Pedro Grifol, were also ejected, in addition to Guardians third-base coach Mike Sarbaugh and relief pitcher Emmanuel Clase.

Elvis Andrus gave the hit a 2-run homer in the White Sox’s eventual 7-4 win over the Guardians. Andrew Vaughn, Luis Robert Jr., and Oscar Coles added solo shots throughout the game to hand the Guardians’ Noah Syndergaard the loss in a game where the pitcher allowed four home runs.

Up next, Cleveland and Chicago face each other again on Sunday, August 6, in the final game of the three-game series in Cleveland at 11:05 a.m.
