IRVING, TX — The Big 12 announced on Monday that TCU’s Max Duggan was selected as the Big 12 Male Athlete of the Year. Duggan is the first Horned Frog to win the award. Nominees were submitted by Big 12 institutions and selected based on athletic performance during the 2022-23 school year by a media panel. Student-athletes were required to be in good academic standing and had to be from a league-sponsored sport.
Per the Big 12’s website, “Duggan led TCU to its first College Football Playoff appearance and a trip to the CFP National Championship game after a 51-45 semifinal win over Michigan at the Vrbo Fiesta Bowl. The Heisman Trophy runner-up was the Big 12 Offensive Player of the Year and a unanimous First Team All-Big 12 selection. He brought home the Davey O’Brien, Johnny Unitas Golden Arm, and Earl Campbell Tyler Rose Awards.”
Duggan was also one of two inaugural recipients of the Bobc Bowlsby Award. The new award is given to two student-athletes (male and female) who represent the absolute best in the Big 12 in leadership and excellence, on and off the field.
The Heisman runner-up had an incredible senior year at TCU. He threw for 3,698 yards on 276/419 passing. He threw 32 touchdowns and had only eight interceptions. Duggan proved to be a dual-threat quarterback as he accumulated 423 yards and nine touchdowns on the ground in 2023. The Horned Frogs fell short in the National Title game against Georgia, but Duggan had a season to remember for the Big 12.
Max Duggan was a 2nd-team All-American in 2022 and a 3-time Academic All-Big 12. In April, the San Diego Chargers selected Duggan in the 7th round for the chance to earn his sport behind Justin Herbert. Experts have some concerns with his arm strength at this point in his career, but with his vision coupled with what he can do with his legs, the rookie quarterback should find himself on a roster somewhere moving forward.
Texas’ Julian Alfred one the award for Big 12 Female Athlete of the Year. Alfred finished the 2023 season as a five-time NCAA Champion and led UT to its fifth NCAA women’s outdoor track and field title, Texas’ first since 2005. She also helped lead the Longhorns to an NCAA Indoor team runner-up finish.
