OXNARD, CA— The defensive tackle the Cowboys selected in the first round doesn’t even like football.
NFL training camp is well underway, just like 2-a-Days for Texas high schoolers, and the Cowboys and Eagles rivalry seems to throw jabs at each other not just every day but every year. It all started when All-World linebacker Micah Parsons said that he believes the Cowboys are the best team in the NFC.
That statement did not sit well with a certain Eagles player. Not only is this player an Eagle, but he is one of their recent first-round picks. Philadelphia’s rookie defensive lineman Jalen Carter told the media, “I’m ready to kill the Cowboys. Everybody’s got beef. I might as well join the wave.”
Carter probably would have been one of the top five players selected in the 2023 NFL Draft if not for his off-the-field issues. While at the combine, a warrant for Carter’s arrest is issued for reckless driving and racing. This is from an incident in which two people, a Georgia staff member, and a Georgia player (Carter was a Georgia Bulldog) were killed in a car crash, and two other people were injured.
On January 15, 2023, Georgia staff member Chandler LeCroy crashed a Ford Expedition that resulted in his and Bulldog player Devin Willock’s death.
Now, Cowboy’s first-round selection Mazi Smith has given his two cents and joked that he doesn’t even like football; he just likes hitting people. “I don’t do no talking. No, I’m trying to hit you. I don’t got nothing to say. I don’t even like football. I like hitting people,” Smith said.
Smith was one of the athletic freaks in the NFL Draft this year and sports incredible brute strength. He was number one on Bruce Feldman’s "The Freaks," a list of the draft's most freaky athletes. At 6’3”, 337 lbs., Smith busted out 22 reps of 325 on the bench press, has a 33” vertical (at that size), and had the fastest three-cone drill of any defensive lineman over 310 lbs. measured at the combine.
In the 60-yard shuttle, the fastest time out of all players was 7.33 seconds, and Smith’s time was 11.9.
The Wolverines have a twist machine in their weight room, and Smith needed a custom-made machine that could hold 800 pounds as the machine they had was only rated for 600 pounds.
In the end, Smith is a player that walks the walk and doesn’t talk the talk. The Cowboys play their first preseason game on August 12, 2023, and meet up with the Eagles for the first time this year on November 5, 2023.
