FOXBOROUGH, MA — Former Dallas Cowboys Running back Ezekiel Elliott is still looking for a contract after being cut by the Cowboys earlier this offseason. He visited the New England Patriots team facility on Saturday.
NFL Network’s Mike Garafalo and Ian Rappaport later reported that although Elliott left New England without a contract, the two parties are still in contact with each other. The Patriots remain in the market for a veteran back to sign to back up its current running back, Rhamondre Stevenson. The Patriots also recently hosted free agent running back Leonard Fournette, and with Dalvin Cook still on the market, New England still has plenty of options.
Elliott was cut by Dallas this offseason after seeing his worst year of production since he entered the league. The Cowboys’ former workhorse ran for 867 yards on 231 carries a season ago. He fell below 4.0 yards per carry for the first time in his career but still managed 3.8 per attempt on the ground. Notably, Elliott scored 12 touchdowns in the red zone. His nose for finding pay dirt near the goal line offers value that several teams in the NFL could use, whether it be the Patriots or someone else.
Dallas still has not ruled out the possibility of bringing Zeke back onto its roster, either. "Ship has not sailed," Cowboys owner Jerry Jones said back at the end of April regarding Elliott. "We haven't made a decision. We've obviously drafted a running back, a little different style than Zeke, but it doesn't change. For us, as far as our interest in Zeke, nothing we did today changes that."
The veteran’s days as a feature back might be over, but depending on the contract, Elliott can still find a way to be productive in the NFL.
