OXNARD, CA— Dallas Cowboys owner Jerry Jones is already giving other teams bulletin board material and training camp just started.
Wednesday was the first day of training camp and the Cowboys kicked things off. Some notable things, the Cowboys are filling holes on the offensive line as All-Pro Zack Martin did not report to camp as he is unhappy with his current contract. Josh Ball, Matt Farinok, and rookie Asim Richards will have their work cut out for them.
Franchise tagged running back Tony Pollard had his first work since breaking his leg against the San Francisco 49ers in the playoffs. Questions surrounding the running backs is who the backup will be. The Cowboys signed Ronald Jones this offseason and drafted Deuce Vaughn in the sixth round. Most fans will remember the heartfelt moment Dallas drafted Vaughn as his father works for the Cowboys and actually made the call from the war room.
More position battles at the wide receiver position. Ceedee Lamb, Brandin Cooks, and Michael Gallup will make up the big three with second year receiver Jalen Tolbert making strides this offseason. The real competition will be between Simi Fehoko, KaVontae Turpin, Dennis Houston, Jalen Brooks, and Jalen Moreno-Cropper as they’ll probably duke it out for one or two spots.
Defensively, the Cowboys already took a hit when safety Donovan Wilson will likely be out four to six weeks with a calf strain. One name that made some plays at minicamp and actually had an interception on Wednesday was Eric Scott Jr. The Cowboys drafted Scott Jr. in the 2023 NFL Draft in the later rounds. If they hit on Scott, they’ll have a very solid group of corners in Trevon Diggs, Stephon Gilmore, DaRon Bland, Scott, and Jourdan Lewis.
Jerry Jones is already looking at the next Super Bowl. Jones said, “We’ve got a lot of work to be done because we’re going to play a lot of young players. But I think that when you weigh it, you weigh where we’ve evolved over the last two or three years with our defense. You look at some of the talent we’ve got. Look at Dak. When I look at all those things, I think we’ve got a chance to be a contender.”.
As for the head coach, Mike McCarthy is starting his fourth season as the top dog in Dallas. McCarthy led the Cowboys to two consecutive 12 win seasons over the last two years and has had some monster drafts since joining the team.
All eyes will be on Dallas as they are every year to get back to the glory days.
