SAN ANGELO— The Los Angeles Chargers signed quarterback Justin Herbert to a five-year, $262.5 million contract Tuesday afternoon. This is the third NFL quarterback to get record-breaking money this year following the Philadelphia Eagles’ Jalen Hurts and the Baltimore Ravens’ Lamar Jackson.
Herbert was drafted by the Chargers out of Oregon in the first round of the 2020 NFL Draft. Since entering the NFL, Herbert has thrown for 14,089 yards and 94 touchdowns with 22 games of over 300 passing yards. He is 25-24 in those three seasons and lost in the playoffs last season to the Jacksonville Jaguars when the Chargers blew a 27-point lead to lose 31-30.
This proves that teams don’t overpay quarterbacks in the NFL. When a team gets a franchise guy, they hold onto him until they are ready to move on.
One thing about the Chargers is, after this season, Khalil Mack, Joey Bosa, Keenan Allen, and Mike Williams will all have cap hits over $30 million, so this may be a do-or-die year for Los Angeles.
Now, other quarterbacks like the Bengal’s Joe Burrow, Miami’s Tua Tagovailoa, and Jacksonville’s Trevor Lawrence will be looking for huge paydays.

And that's why I don't watch pro sports any longer. Overpaid players have that guaranteed cash and have no incentive to play their best. College ball is a genuine contest with both sides giving their best.
