ARLINGTON— The Dallas Cowboys have locked up one of the best current ballhawks in the NFL.
“My dad is the best corner in the world.”- Aaiden Diggs (Trevon's son)
The Dallas Cowboys and Pro Bowl cornerback Trevon Diggs have agreed on a five-year, $97 million contract with a $21.25 million signing bonus. The deal is worth up to $104 million with incentives.
At $19.4 million, Diggs is slotted in as the fifth-highest paid corner in the NFL behind Jaire Alexander (Green Bay), Marson Lattimore (Saints), Jalen Ramsey (Miami), Marlon Humphrey (Baltimore), and Denzel Ward (Browns).
Diggs, brother to Buffalo Bills wide receiver Stefon Diggs, was a second-round pick out of Alabama. While his rookie season showed flashes and ended up with three total picks, but Diggs put on a show his sophomore season with 11 interceptions. Last season, he ended up with three interceptions.
Diggs may not be a shut-down-the-side-of-the-field corner as he has given up big plays in the past, but he does get his hands on a lot of throws. Interceptions are only one part of the game as Diggs has knocked down 49 passes in his career. Either way its looked at, Diggs at the very least gets the ball back to the offense and is a huge part of the Cowboys’ defense.
Locking up Diggs is a big move in a loud offseason. Before the draft, Dallas traded two fifth round picks for deep threat Brandin Cooks and former defensive player of the year, cornerback Stephon Gilmore. Both Gilmore and Diggs, in addition to second year pro DaRon Bland, veteran slot corner Jourdan Lewis, and rookie Eric Scott Jr., the Cowboys have built a competitive corner position.
Now, the Cowboys need to focus on quarterback Dak Prescott, All-Pro offensive lineman Zack Martin, and top three overall defensive player Micah Parsons on deck for new contracts.
