ARLINGTON, TX — Texas Longhorns Head Football Coach Steve Sarkisian thinks that his quarterback Quinn Ewers is poised to have a breakout year in 2023. At the annual Big 12 Conference Media Days on Wednesday, Sarkisian gave an additional interview after the coach press conference and talked about his quarterback.
After Ewers struggled at times a season ago, Sarkisian said there’s no cause for concern. “Well, I think that’s part of the growth, right? [The struggles] are part of the progression of becoming a player of his caliber in this stage of his career, Sarkisian said. “You have to have the ability to persevere. I give Quinn a lot of credit because he did persevere. There were not a lot of sunshine and rosy days in his first year as a starting quarterback. [However], he never wavered. He stood tall. He answered every question, stood right in there, and continued to work. I think we are seeing a different version of Quinn today than we did a year ago.”

Ewers finished his 2022 campaign by throwing 172 for 296 for 2,177 yards, 15 touchdowns, and six interceptions with a 58% completion percentage. The stats put up by the young man were nothing short of impressive in a Power Five conference, but Ewers's head coach thinks he has much more to bring to the table. The Southlake Carol standout enters his second year at the helm for the Longhorns after a breakout performance in the Alamo Bowl last season against Washington. Ewers had his best game statistically on the year when he threw for 369 yards and a touchdown.
Texas was picked to win the Big 12 in the 2023 Preseason Poll last week, and it seems like critics agree. The Longhorns have another stacked roster in its last year in the Big 12 before the ‘Horns move on to the gauntlet that is the SEC (South Eastern Conference). Texas has plenty of challenges on the schedule early, most notably against the Alabama Crimson Tide on September 9 in Tuscaloosa. Ewers will have to continue to progress if the Longhorns have any hope of competing for a Big 12 Title and a possible playoff berth this season.
