SAN ANGELO— Dave Campbell’s High School Football Magazine seems to hate the Concho Valley as only one team in the Concho Valley made its "Top 10" rankings.
The Dave Campbell’s Football Magazine that just hit shelves only has one Concho Valley team ranked inside the “Top 10” in their respective classification.
The Wall Hawks are ranked at sixth overall in the 3A-DII. Other than the Hawks, there isn’t another Concho Valley team in their “Top 10”. The Sonora Broncos, Irion County Hornets, and the Richland Spring Coyotes are ranked 11th overall in 2A-DI, 1A-DI, and 1A-DII respectively. The Mason Punchers are next at 13th overall in 2A-DII. The Miles Bulldogs come in at the bottom of 2A-DII at 23rd overall.
Now teams that Concho Valley teams play are ranked favorably. Midland Legacy is ranked at 38th overall. The Rebels are in San Angelo Central’s district and Dave Campbell’s projects Legacy to win the district. Wolfforth Frenship is getting some love as a “sleeper”. Don’t forget, Frenship actually beat the Rebels last season 49-34. A final score that doesn’t reflect the game as the Tigers jumped on Legacy in the first half, 42-7.
Where are the Bobcats? They are seated at fourth in the district even after graduating all but three offensive starters and four defensive starters.
Lake View is slotted to get fifth in a five-team district behind the Brownwood Lions, Lubbock Estacado Matadors, Big Spring Steers, and Andrews Mustangs. The Lions are ranked at 17th at the moment. They have one offensive starter returning but nine defensive starters coming back.
Into 3A-DII, the Hawks are sixth right now but Canadian, the team that knocked them out of the playoffs last season is the top ranked team right now. The team Canadian lost to after beating Wall, Gunter, is ranked two. Wall’s district opponent, the Early Longhorns, are a sleeper and are returning 11 starters, six on offense and five on defense.
On to 2A-DI, the Sonora Broncos and the Mason Punchers are ranked 11th and 13th. The Broncos are projected to take the top spot in their district with the Forsan Buffalos at two, Reagan County Owls at three, and the Christoval Cougars are four. The Ozona Lions and the Anthony Wildcats are projected at fifth and sixth respectively.
Back to Sonora, not only are they projected to be the district winner, but senior quarterback Jaime Buitron is the preseason offensive MVP of the district.
Onto Mason, they are expected to win their 13th consecutive district championship over the Stockdale Brahmas, Johnson City Eagles, Junction Eagles, and Harper Longhorns. Puncher running back Ryne Todd is projected as the district offensive MVP.
The Junction Eagles, while not ranked, are returning an experienced bunch with nine starters coming back on each side of the ball.
In 2A-DII, Miles is ranked at the bottom at 23rd and the Sterling City Eagles come in as a sleeper. The Bulldogs are in a district with the Albany Lions who are the defending state champions. The Lions are expected to win the district with Miles behind them at two, then the Roscoe Plowboys and Cross Plains Buffalos are three and four ahead of Hamlin and Abilene TLCA.
Two sets of Eagles are projected to go third and fourth in Sterling City and Eldorado respectively. The Wink Wildcats and McCamey Badgers are slotted one and two. Water Valley is projected to go sixth. The Wildcats had a rough season last year with former head coach Charles Boles going through cancer treatment. Aaron Whitmire took over the position this year and brought on former San Angelo TLCA head coach Matt Jones to the staff as the defensive coordinator.
1A-DI and 1A-DII isn’t much different as Irion County, Richland Springs, Rochelle, and Blackwell made the rankings with Irion County and Coyotes making it at 11th , Rochelle at 17th and Blackwell coming in at 25th.
The Hornets will be coached by their former defensive coordinator, Shawn Harrison. They are returning one offensive starter and two on the defensive side. Parker Posey is the preseason defensive MVP and Wyatt Terrell from Menard is the preseason offensive MVP. Irion County is slotted to be the district champion, with the Yellowjackets from Menard at two, Robert Lee Steers at three, Veribest Falcons at four, and Eden Bulldogs at five. This should be a very competitive district.
In 1A-DII, Richland Springs is slotted at two behind the Cherokee Indians, but the Coyotes have the preseason defensive MVP Billy Perry on their team. The Rochelle Hornets are slotted right behind Richland Springs at three.
The Blackwell Hornets graduated quite a bit, only returning one offensive and two defensive starters but Hornet leader Karter Cummings is the district preseason defensive MVP. Blackwell is sitting at two behind Loraine and Bronte is sitting at three.
