ARLINGTON, TX — The Big 12 Conference kicked off its 2023 Media Days on Wednesday, July 12. All the head football coaches and notable players from across the Big 12 gathered together at Cowboys Stadium in Arlington to discuss the upcoming 2023 Football season.
The first to take the microphone was Big 12 Commissioner Brett Yormark. Yormark took questions from the audience and discussed what to expect from the Big 12 in not just football but all sports in 2023. Notably, the Commissioner spoke about the establishment of Big 12 Mexico. The new program is the Big 12’s first international extension that will see Big 12 men’s and women’s basketball, women’s soccer, and baseball games held in Mexico.
Big 12 Mexico’s first contest will be a men’s and women’s basketball matchup between Kansas and Houston, held in Mexico City at Arena CDMX in December of 2024. Following the launch of Big 12 basketball in Mexico, Big 12 women’s soccer and baseball will participate in exhibitions against clubs from the region. Additionally, the Big 12 will explore establishing a football bowl game in Monterrey starting in 2026. This would be the first bowl game ever held in Mexico.
On Day 1, seven of the 14 Big 12 Coaches held a press conference. TCU, Houston (new member), Kansas, Baylor, Oklahoma State, Texas, and BYU (new member) all appeared on Day 1. Kansas State, UCF (new member), Texas Tech, Cincinnati (new member), West Virginia, Iowa State, and Oklahoma will hold their conference on Day 2 on Thursday.
