FRISCO, TX — After an abysmal post-season from former Dallas Cowboys Kicker Brett Maher, the Cowboys finally added another kicker to the roster on Thursday. Dallas signed Brandon Aubrey, a USFL standout who spent the last two seasons with the Birmingham Stallions. Maher missed five extra point attempts in the playoffs a season ago, prompting Dallas to explore other options in the kicking game.
Before signing Aubrey, the Cowboys took a look at veteran kickers Robbie Gould and longtime Green Bay Packers Kicker Mason Crosby but ultimately decided to move in a different direction. Brett Maher, who set a franchise record with 137 points, but struggled with the Yips in the playoffs last year, did not resign with the team.

Aubrey, a Plano, Texas native, excelled at soccer. The talented soccer player played college ball at Notre Dame before he was drafted in the first round of the 2017 MLS (Major League Soccer) Draft by Toronto FC. At Notre Dame, the talented defender scored 15 goals in 76 appearances with the team. Aubrey spent two years with Toronto FC’s development program but never found success in the MLS. He made the switch to football when the Stallions drafted him in the start-up league’s draft in 2022. He spent two seasons with the Stallions and was named to the All-USFL team in 2022.
The Cowboys’ newest kicker will compete with Tristan Vizcaino for the starting job come September. Vizcaino currently sits ahead of Aubrey on the depth chart, likely due to his NFL experience. Vizcaino made 11 of 12 field goal attempts in his NFL career for the Cardinals, Chargers, and 49ers. Hopefully, Dallas will have its prayers answered after a poor showing from its kicking game in the playoffs last season.
