COLLEGE STATION— The Miles Bulldogs have won back-to-back State football 7-on-7 Tournaments.
The Bulldogs went on a championship run Friday, beating Sudan 28-26, then East Bernard 28-27. They took on the Gunter Tigers and won 34-21 then played Millsap and won 19-6. In the championship, Miles took on the Poth Pirates on won 22-20. The Miles Bulldogs have now won back-to-back state 7-on-7 tournaments.
Miles is built for throwing the football being quarterback Hayven Book, who will be a senior this coming school year. In his junior year, Book threw the football for a monster 2,435 yards and 38 touchdowns to six interceptions. He added 13 rushing touchdowns for a total of 55.
The Bulldogs certainly have the weapons out wide this season. The outlier is Cooper Ellison, who had 599 yards last year, second to only his brother, Carson Ellison, who graduated this year. Of course, Devin Medina can expect a lot of carries and passes out of the back field and Manuel Torres can look to take a big step up.
The Sonora Broncos also were in the tournament and beat Henrietta 32-28 and beat Lexington 27-20. Yesterday, the Broncos had lost two games by one point. When Sonora played Millsap, the Bulldogs put it on the Broncos 40-20.
One element to the Bronco’s game is the rushing attack which isn’t what 7-on-7 is about. Buitron put up 2,114 yards on the ground and did have an impressive 1,640 yards as well. Key pieces coming back are Edgar DeLuna, Dylan Ford, Owen Jones, and Jose Guerra.
The Miles Bulldogs and Sonora Broncos are two teams that are expected to make runs at state. Only thing is, the Bulldogs have the defending state champion Albany Lions not only has a playoff hurdle, but a district hurdle. The Broncos also have a defending state champion in their way, the Hawley Bearcats.
