Cowboys Dak Prescott Talks Ezekiel Elliot's Possible Future in Dallas

PROSPER, TX — Dallas Cowboys’ quarterback Dak Prescott and former Cowboys running back Ezekiel Elliot are spending much of their off-season together this summer. Prescott’s home in Prosper, Texas, just north of the Cowboys’ facilities in Frisco, features a 55-yard artificial turf practice field that he regularly invites his teammates to practice and work out. Lately, Elliot spends time with Prescott out on that field.

The Cowboys released Ezekiel Elliot back on March 15. Dallas designated him as a post-June1 cut and saved the team $11 million in cap space after injuries and a decline in his production marred his performance over the past few seasons. The 7-year veteran spent his entire career so far with the Cowboys.

The Cowboys released Elliott on March 15, designating him a post-June 1 cut and saving the team $11 million after he struggled with his health and declining play last season. The decision was described as mutual by owner Jerry Jones. Prescott has expressed his desire to bring Zeke back for the 2023 NFL season.

“That’s my best friend,” Prescott said. “We’ll continue to work, continue to push each other. He looks great. I’m excited for whatever opportunity he has coming up, and I’m always his biggest fan.”

Elliot has not signed with another team this offseason and remains a free agent. Several veteran runningbacks, such as Dalvin Cook and Kareem Hunt, remain on the free agent market, and Prescott says he wishes them all the best.

“I think the running back position is tough,” Prescott added. “All those guys are dynamic backs, can still play and have a lot left in the tank. I hope all of them make the right decision and not just jump on whatever’s fast. You’re never surprised about what this league does. You always have to understand it’s a business and try not to take anything personal.”

Cowboys’ Owner Jerry Jones hinted at the possibility of Elliot rejoining the team earlier in the offseason. Whether or not this ever comes to pass remains to be seen. “There’s an active free agent market relative to some pretty talented people out there,” Jones said during a June 5 media session. “We want to keep a close eye on that. I never shut the door — never — relative to the potential to smartly add to our team for this year.”

Elliot still brings several aspects of his game to the table that would be an asset to Dallas moving forward. He remains one of the best pass-blocking running backs in the league as well as one of, if not the best, goal-line back on the market. Check out some of his pass blocking work below.

“I emphasize that, for this year. Mainly, I would tell you that 99% of my thinking is about this year. Now, you’ve got to think about the impact on other years when you make these decisions, so. You name it whether it be Zeke. Whether it be where we are with the guys that we worked out here today," Prescott said.

The Cowboys will stick with Tony Pollard at the runningback position moving forward, but there is still a real possibility that Elliot will rejoin his former team come this fall.
