LOS ANGELES, CA — The 2023 U.S. Open saw a golfer who never finished better than 75th take down some of the biggest names in golf as Denver native Wyndham Clark won his first major by a single stroke on Sunday. Rory McIlroy, Scottie Scheffler, and Rickie Fowler ran Wyndham Clark down to the wire, but their efforts weren’t enough. At the Los Angeles Country Club, Clark finished 10-under for the tournament to win this year’s U.S. Open.
On Sunday, Clark opened with a three-shot lead. Mistakes in the round knocked out Fowler and Scheffler, but McIlroy stuck with Clark throughout the day. Clark bogeyed two of his last four holes to let McIlroy pull within one shot, but the former No. 1 golfer in the world managed no better than par over the same stretch. Rory’s 9-year drought without a major continued as Clark hoisted the trophy after the 18th hole.
On the 18th, Clark hit his shot down the right side of the fairway before his second shot left him just short of the green. The crowd waited on bated breath as he two-putted his way to victory. As a thunderous crowd applauded his win, he embraced his caddie, John Ellis.
Clark’s first major victory came with a nice paycheck. The golfer took home $3.6 million in winnings with the win. Now that he has one major under his belt, the U.S. Open champion now sets his sights on the Open Championship. The Open Championship is the oldest tournament and boasts one of the most prestigious histories in professional golf. Royal Liverpool in Hoylake, England, will host the event this year. The Open, or British Open, starts on July 20.
