The Longhorns and Aggies Storied Rivalry is Back

AUSTIN, TX — The Texas Longhorns found out the matchups for its first football season in the SEC (South Eastern Conference) in the 2024 season on Wednesday night. Which opponents Texas would face for their first year in the SEC (South Eastern Conference) has been the talk of the offseason.

Older Texas and Texas A&M fans rejoice. The rivalry is coming back. The Longhorns and Aggies play each other at Kyle Field in College Station in 2024. The two storied rivals have not played each other since the Aggies left for the SEC back in 2012. On top of that, the Red River Rivalry against Oklahoma in Dallas stays intact moving forward. The downside for the Longhorns is their tough road schedule in its first year in the SEC.

In addition to the electric environment Texas will face when they travel to Texas A&M, the Longhorns also play Arkansas and Vanderbilt on the road. Technically, the Oklahoma Sooners are the home team in Dallas this year, so that game counts as a road game for Texas as well.

Home games for the University of Texas in 2024 will see Mississippi State and Kentucky play at Darrell K Royal-Texas Memorial Stadium. The other two home games include tough matchups against the Georgia Bulldogs and Florida Gators. The Longhorns need to improve as a team quickly if they hope not just to survive but excel in its first season in the SEC.

Finally.... they should have played every year they didn't. TAMU's entire identity revolves around that famous rivalry. I don't watch much football these days, but I'll watch that game.

On a side note... the A&M marching band is called the "Fighting Texas Aggie Band" because in it's first few years, those who wished to be the Drum Major locked themselves inside a gym and the last man standing was the Drum Major. Back when men were men.

As an Aggie (there ain't no former Aggies) I cherish the old rivalry.  As an aside, I was there during the building of the highest stack of logs in '69 and its ignition as Bonfire.  Glorious indeed.

I still mourn the collapse of the stack of logs that came years later and caused such heartbreak.  By the way, Aggies don't say "The bonfire".  We simply say Bonfire.

Gig 'em.
