"The Pirate" to be Honored at Texas Tech

LUBBOCK— One of the most famous former Texas Tech head football coaches is being honored by the Red Raiders.

On June 14, 2023, Texas Tech announced that the late, great Mike Leach, also known as “The Pirate,” will be inducted into the Texas Tech Hall of Honor. Leach is the winningest head coach in Red Raider history with an overall record of 84-43. He took Texas Tech to 10 straight bowl appearances and made the Red Raiders a team to pay attention to nationally.

Leach was fired by Texas Tech in 2009 after he allegedly told then wide receiver Adam James, son of Craig James, to stand in a dark closet or shed to deal with concussion symptoms.

Leach died on December 12, 2022, after he had complications from a heart condition.

The Hall of Honor ceremony will be held on September 29 and on September 30 when the Red Raiders take on the Houston Cougars. Former Texas Tech and NFL coach Kliff Kingsbury will also be inducted.
