Grape Creek Welcomes New Head Volleyball Coach

GRAPE CREEK, TX — Grape Creek High School recently filled one of its Head Coaching vacancies. On Tuesday, June 13, the Eagles announced that Lea Morris will be the next head coach of the Lady Eagles Volleyball team. Morris takes the helm of a struggling Grape Creek program in need of a new direction.

“We are very excited to name Lea Morris as our new Volleyball coach,” Athletic Director and Head Football Coach Tanner Thiel said.

Coach Morris has coached Volleyball for 18 years and most recently served as the Head Volleyball Coach for Watervalley back in 2018. Her resume includes head coaching positions at Lubbock Cooper, Marathon, Fort Davis, Llano, Veribest, and Water Valley. The Marathon native won a district championship at Marathon, made the playoffs at Fort Davis, and started the Llano Volleyball program. At Water Valley, Morris helped the Lady Wildcats win two district championships and three straight Regional Tournament appearances and helped maintain a no. 1 state ranking in back-to-back years.

Morris retired from coaching in 2018 before serving as an assistant coach at Miles High School in 2021. “This was a bit of an unusual situation. I can’t honestly say I would have taken a head job again just anywhere,” Morris said. “The Grape Creek job presented itself, and I had the opportunity to coach my daughter, who is a Junior and is one of our setters.”

She says that she is excited about the opportunity to work with this particular group of girls at Grape Creek. “This opportunity means the world to me. My daughter transferred to Grape Creek last year, and in getting to know her teammates, I am excited about the possibilities. There are some talented young ladies, and I want to give them the tools to allow them to shine,” she continued.

Welcome back to the Head Coaching ranks, Coach Morris. The greater San Angelo community looks forward to what the Lady Eagles will do in the future. She has an extensive resume and excels in building up programs from the ground up. This coach could be exactly what the Lady Eagles need moving forward.
