WASHINGTON, D.C. – The Washington Commanders may be facing a third name change after the United States Patent and Trademark Office denied the request to trademark the name.
According to multiple reports, on May 18, 2023, the USPTO rejected the team's trademark application for two reasons. The first reason was the existence of an already trademarked name, 'Commanders Classic.' The second reason was a pending application filed by an individual in the D.C. area.
The team, formerly known as the Washington Redskins for decades, changed its name to the Washington Football Team in 2020, claiming Redskins was culturally insensitive. After two seasons, the team settled on the name Commanders.
Now, Washington may find itself needing to change its name once again. Among the popular options considered during the name selection process were Red Hogs, Armada, and Sentinels.
