UIL Slams McCamey Athletics Over Viral Video Incident

MCCAMEY, TX —McCamey High School and its Athletic Director and Head Softball Coach, Michael Woodard, appeared on a Zoom meeting during the UIL State Executive meeting on Tuesday, May 23. His appearance during the meeting stemmed from an incident during the Area Round Playoff matchup between McCamey High School and Cisco High School that went viral online.

In the video, the McCamey Catcher hits two Cisco players in the head with a softball. Watch one of the videos here:

UIL officials determined that the catcher in question had four incidents, like the one that went viral during the discussion with the two McCamey School staff members. Two of which were during the regular season, one in the bi-district playoff game, and finally, the one in the area round that went viral in Cisco.

When asked about the incidents, Coach Woodard claimed that he had not noticed a pattern in the catcher’s behavior but would have taken action if he did. McCamey removed the catcher, a senior on the softball team, from all athletic activities and gave Woodard a written reprimand after the viral video. After the discussion concluded, the UIL unanimously agreed to give the McCamey School District and Coach Woodard two years probation and a public reprimand. Woodard is also the Head Football Coach, along with his duties as the Athletic Director and Head Softball Coach.

The UIL stated that if anything like the events in the viral video were to happen again, more severe consequences would be put in place.
