FRISCO, TX — The Dallas Cowboys will get their chance at revenge in Week 5 on Sunday, October 8, on Sunday Night Football. Over the past two seasons, the San Francisco 49ers eliminated the Cowboys from the playoffs. The renewed rivalry gets another chapter in October.
First announced on the Today Show on NBC on Thursday morning, the Cowboys and 49ers will face off for the first time on Sunday Night Football since 1990. The Cowboys remaining schedule will be released on Thursday at 7 p.m. The NFL airs the schedule release for the entire league on NFL Network. Although this regular season rematch isn’t a win-or-go-home scenario this time around, the Week 5 matchup is one of the biggest games on the Cowboys’ schedule this year.
This season will be the fourth season in a row that Dallas and San Francisco clash. The Cowboys defeated the Niners 41-33 in 2020 before losing in the playoffs in consecutive seasons in 2021 and 2022, 23-17 and 19-12. As even as a rivalry series can be, the all-time record between San Francisco and Dallas sits at 19-19-1.
Last season, Dak Prescott struggled against the 49ers' staunch defense. He put up lackluster numbers and turned the ball over more than once. Prescott completed 62% of his passes, going 23/37 for 206 yards, one touchdown, and two interceptions. He needs a redemption game against San Francisco, and it looks like he will get his shot in October.
The Cowboys added veteran talent to their roster this offseason. Entering 2023, Dallas sports wide-out Brandin Cooks and cornerback Stephon Gillmore. These additions might tip the balance in the Cowboys’ favor this season as the 49ers hash out their quarterback situation between Trey Lance and Brock Purdy.
Other non-divisional opponents for the Cowboys include home games against the Los Angeles Rams, Seattle Seahawks, New England Patriots, New York Jets, and Detroit Lions. The Cowboys will play away games against the Buffalo Bills, Los Angeles Chargers, Miami Dolphins, Carolina Panthers, and Arizona Cardinals. Exact dates and times will be announced, with the rest of the schedule release on Thursday night.
