Royals Pitcher Takes Line Drive to the Face

KANSAS CITY, MO — Kansas City Royals Pitcher Ryan Yarbrough had his start come to a halt suddenly after a baseball to the face forced him off the mound. The Royals still managed to pull out a 5-1 victory, but the scary 6th-inning head injury left the stadium in silence for a time.

Up 2-1 against the Oakland A’s, Yarbrough faced A’s first basemen, Ryan Noda. Well into the at-bat, Noda cracked the 5th pitch right back in Yarbrough’s face. The 106.1 mph line drive struck the pitcher in the face causing him to immediately fall to the ground clutching his head. Royals manager Matt Quatraro and Kansas City’s training staff rushed onto the field to administer medical attention. Yarbrough left the field under his own power but required a towel to cover his face as he entered the clubhouse.

Before Yarbrough left the game with a head injury, he pitched 5.2 innings with two strikeouts and a walk. After the game, Quatraro talked about the incident. “It was scary. I mean, the dugout went silent.”

“I can’t think of a worse thing to see on the field. Luckily, when we got out there, he was talking and aware of what was going on and what had happened,” Quartraro continued. “As far as how he’s doing, he’s alert, and they’ve taken him to get some testing.”

Yarbrough had testing done at a local hospital, and it seems that the pitcher avoided serious injuries to his face. However, the Kansas City Royals management might consider putting Yarbrough on the seven-day injury list for any concussion that he might have suffered due to the incident. It also gives him ample time to recover from the ordeal.

The 31-year-old pitcher is in his first year with the Royals. Yarbrough got the win on Sunday, going 5.2 innings and allowing just one run. The Royals won the game 5-1 and moved to 9-26 in the process. With the loss, the A’s dropped to 8-27.

Up next, the Royals host the White Sox on Monday, May 8, at 6:40 p.m., while the A's travel to New York to play the Yankees at 6:05 p.m.
