GREEN BAY, WI — After the departure of MVP quarterback Aaron Rodgers, the Green Bay Packers had some serious decisions to make. With the 2023 NFL Draft in the books, the Packers took the next step on Tuesday, May 2. Green Bay decided not to pick up new quarterback Jordan Love’s 5th-year option on his rookie contract.
Instead, Jordan Love and the Packers have agreed to a one-year extension to keep Love in Green Bay through 2024. The extension consists of $22.5 million with $13.5 million guaranteed. NFL Network’s Tom Pelissero first reported the news. Tuesday marked the deadline for 2020 first-rounders to have their fifth-year options picked up.
The organization and the fans hope that Jordan Love is the future after Rodgers left via trade to the Jets just days before the NFL Draft. The 2020 first-round draft pick appeared in few games last year, but entering Year 4, Love is set to take over full-time for the Green and Gold.
Packers Fans might have good reason to cheer moving forward. In his only meaningful action last season, after Aaron Rodgers exited the game versus the Philadelphia Eagles, Love entered the game and immediately lit up Philadelphia’s defense. He went 6-9 for 113 yards and one touchdown in about half of the 4th quarter. He finished the game with a 146.8 rating with a 92.9 QBR.
However, Love struggled in his preseason starts over the last two seasons. While one can argue that the actual roster isn’t on the field with him, fans like to see their guy perform well, no matter his environment. With the extension, the Packers show Jordan Love they are ready to commit to another quarterback. Hopefully, Love can reward that trust and fully cement himself as the starter for the foreseeable future.
