FORT STOCKTON, TX — The Central Lady Cats softball team entered last Friday’s Bi-District playoff game against the El Paso Eastwood Lady Troopers as heavy underdogs. However, it seems like no one told them as they entered the single-elimination game with a fire lit underneath them.
The Lady Cats scored 13 runs, scoring seven in the fourth and six in the fifth, before run-ruling the Lady Troopers in five innings. The Lady Cats advanced to the second round 13-0. Once Central kickstarted their offense, the Lady Troopers could not find a way to slow them down. Defensively, Alyssa Rodriguez took the mound and pitched all five innings. She shut out Eastwood, allowing only one hit, and added three strikeouts.
Central’s toughness in the first round was evident in how the rest of the Little Southwest Conference performed in the opening round of the playoffs. All four teams (Odessa Permian, Midland High, Frenship, and Central) all advanced to the second round. Even though the Lady Cats came into the postseason as a 4-seed, no one should underestimate or count Central out.
This win was a pivotal step in this softball program’s history. After making the playoffs for only the third time ever (2017, 2018, 2023), Central won their first Bi-District Championship in their program’s history on Friday. The Lady Cats continued to play with a sense of urgency over the past few weeks and look for that same attitude to continue as they move into the Area round.
Up next, the road to a state championship gets even more difficult moving forward. The Lady Cats face the Lady Dragons from Southlake Carroll in the Area Round on Thursday, May 5. Game time and location have yet to be announced, but be sure to check in for the announcement.
