BOULDER, CO —The controversial start to Deion Sanders's coaching career continues as 18 Colorado Football players entered the Transfer Portal following the conclusion of the Buffs Spring Game. Sanders has stayed in the headlines since he took the job at Colorado at the end of the 2023 season. He initially told players to “hop in the portal” when he arrived and began his rebuild.
Now he’s in the headlines again after a total of 46 players entered the transfer portal since becoming head coach. Apparently, now he’s even being accused of withholding transferring players' practice film to potential schools who might want to recruit them. Post High School graduate and redshirt freshman tight end Zach Courtney is one of those players.
On Twitter, he posted a statement saying, “For the coaches who are trying to recruit me. I am sorry, but I will not be able to get y’all my film from my practices last season since I am not allowed to have it because the head coach at CU won’t allow it.”
“This is very unlucky, and if you have any questions, let me know,” he continued. Courtney isn’t alone in his plight, as fellow teammate Kaden Ludwick echoed Courtney’s statements in the comments on that tweet. “We all need our film,” Ludwick said.
If these accusations are true, Sanders might have some questions to answer. Telling players that they might need to transfer and then denying them help out the door is not a good look. All this drama might be part and parcel of Sanders’s bloody rebuild.
After the Buffs finished 1-11 last season (their second time since entering the Pac-12 in 2008), Sanders said the culture needed to change. With 46 players leaving and 28 transferring in so far, the former NFL Superstar did precisely what he said he would. Colorado’s program will look nothing like it did a year ago.
College Football fans will see whether or not Sanders's tactics pay off during the 2023 season, but as of right now, Buffs fans might be unhappy.
