KANSAS CITY, MO — The S2 Cognitive Test results taken by quarterback prospects for this year's 2023 NFL Draft were just leaked. With the Draft right around the corner, some of these scores might shake up some last-minute decisions. Alabama quarterback Bryce Young scored the highest at 98% and Ohio State’s CJ Stroud, well, did not do as well. The potential No. 1 pick in the draft scored just an 18% overall on the test, ranking dead last among this years QB crop.
The S2 Cognitive Test, the test that replaced the Wonderlic, has nine different segments, all of which are graded separately (like the SAT). The measurements used in each section include a quarterback's ability to track multiple objects, make complex decisions, and filter through if/then scenarios with different defensive scenarios with an ability to improvise. The test takes 45 minutes and is on a computer, ultimately measuring a players' ability to quickly dissect information that appears on a screen in front of them.
It’s a different breed of test than the Wonderlic. The Wonderlic is an assessment used to measure the cognitive ability and problem-solving aptitude. It consists of 50 multiple-choice questions to be answered in 12 minutes. The score is calculated as the number of correct answers given in the allotted time, and a score of 20 is intended to indicate average intelligence. The S2 Cognitive test replaced the Wonderlic in 2015.
Here are the results for the quarterback prospects from the S2 Cognitive Test:
- Bryce Young, Alabama - 98%
- Jake Haener, Fresno State - 96%
- Will Levis, Kentucky - 93%
- Jaren Hall, BYU - 93%
- Clayton Tune, Houston - 84%
- Anthony Richardson, Florida - 79%
- Hendon Hooker, Tennessee - 46%
- C.J. Stroud, Ohio State - 18%
Quarterback prospects are the most highly scrutinized players leading up to the draft. With the lowest score this year, CJ Stroud may have to answer questions about the reports that have come out. The Athletic posted the S2 test scores a week ago, and the questions have already started for Stroud.
While the former Buckeye says he is not worried about the test, Stroud's result might affect his spot in the draft tomorrow. It will come down to whether or not the teams care about tests like these. However, for guys like Bryce Young, this test does nothing but help the future NFL quarterback. The ability to perform at a high level regardless of what the individual attempts bodes well for the former Crimson Tide quarterback.
It’s still a toss-up with who will go number one and number two in the Draft on Thursday night. The Carolina Panthers traded with the Chicago Bears specifically to take a quarterback number one overall. While the Houston Texans have not confirmed that they are taking a quarterback with the second pick, all rumors point to that conclusion. America will just have to wait for Thursday night to see who goes first, C.J. Stroud, Bryce Young, or maybe even an unexpected dark horse in the draft.
