NFL Player Who Suffered Scary On-field Cardiac Arrest Cleared to Play Again

ORCHARD PARK, NY — The Buffalo Bills announced on Tuesday, April 18, that Safety Damar Hamlin had been fully cleared by his doctors to return to playing football. Almost five months since Hamlin collapsed on the field with cardiac arrest during the Bills and Bengals Week 16 matchup, the safety is well enough to play.

Hamlin saw his last specialist on Friday, April 14, and is in attendance and participating in voluntary workouts with the Bills. Buffalo's General Manager Brandon Beane said, "He's fully cleared, he's here, and he is of the mindset. He's in a great head space to come back and make his return."

Beane said that Hamlin spent much of his time recently speaking to several specialists about the possibility of returning to football. "When he left Cincinnati, he came here. It was Buffalo General [Hospital]," Beane said.

"He saw a couple of specialists here in Buffalo, and then since then, he's seen three additional specialists, most recently on Friday, and they're all in agreement. It's not 2-1 or 3-1 or anything like that. They're all in lockstep of what this was and that he's cleared, resumed full activities just like anyone else who was coming back from an injury or whatever."

While Hamlin is medically cleared, he still has that last mental hurdle to overcome. That entire experience horrified everyone involved, and Hamlin's teammates, family, and fans can only continue to root for Damar until the start of next season. However, the first step has been cleared. The Bills began their voluntary offseason program on Monday.

When asked, in an interview by Michael Strahan before the Super Bowl, what he thought of his situation, Hamlin said, "Eventually. That's always the goal, like I said, as a competitor, you know, I'm trying to do things to keep advancing my situation. But I'm allowing that to be in God's hands. I'm just thankful he gave me a second chance."

The Bills' first pre-season game is on August 13 against the Indianapolis Colts. The young safety has a little less than four months to be ready, and the entire football world is waiting.
