ABILENE, TX — San Angelo Central Grad Maverick McIvor is geared up and ready to start another football season at the helm of the Abilene Christian Wildcats. The Ex-Texas Tech Red Raider Quarterback transferred to Abilene Christian University last school year and played in all but one game in 2022.
Last season, the 6’2”, 210 lb quarterback threw for 2,212 yards, 16 touchdowns, and nine interceptions. He helped lead the Wildcats to a 7-4 overall record with a 3-1 record in conference play (WAC). Headed into the 2023 season, McIvor now has one full year, including spring training, under his belt. The Wildcats wrapped up Spring Football last Saturday, April 15.
ACU enters the 2023 season with a brand new offensive coaching staff. The Wildcats moved on from former offensive coordinator Stephen Lee after the Wildcats' offense looked anemic at times last season. Offensive Line coach Ryan Pugh took over at the start of Spring Training, and Head Coach Keith Patterson has since hired several other new coaches.
Only time will tell what the new-look Abilene Christian offense will look like, but as for McIvor, he played well during the Spring Game. While he played with the one’s during the game, there are other experienced quarterbacks on the roster that Maverick will compete against to retain that starting job throughout the season. Ethan Long, a Senior, threw for 609 yards and six touchdowns in six games last season. The Wildcats also have Arizona State transfer Baker Long with a full season under his belt as well.
ACU went into its final game of the regular season with a chance to win the WAC title. Stephen F. Austin ultimately defeated the Wildcats 24-21 to claim the conference title, but with McIvor under center, ACU has another shot to claim that championship.
