Soccer: No. 23 Lake View Maidens Fall Late to No. 18 Canyon Randall

LUBBOCK, TX — The No. 23 Lake View Maidens traveled to Lubbock on Tuesday to play their Area Round matchup against the No. 18 Canyon Randall Lady Raiders. After they scored in the first 10 minutes, the Maidens played a defensive battle for much of the contest. Lake View pulled ahead again midway through the second half, but two goals from the Lady Raiders in the final 13 minutes ended the Maidens' season, 3-2.

After a penalty, Jazmyne Flores redirected a free-kick to put the Maidens on the board with 33 minutes remaining in the first half. The fortuitous score gave life to an offense that was otherwise absent the entire first half. The Lady Raiders made accurate passing downfield to give them multiple opportunities to score. Finally, with 16 minutes to go until halftime, Canyon Randall broke through the Maidens' defense. Lake View headed to halftime tied, 1-1, at the break.

Lake View looked more energetic in the second frame. The ladies made it to the ball quicker and kept possession longer. With just under 26 minutes left to play, Jaylen Cuellar received a through ball behind the defense. She faked out the keeper and put the ball over their head to retake the lead. Maidens led 2-1.

Canyon Randall went on the all-out attack after Lake View’s second goal. The Maidens made them pay where they could, ricocheting shots off the crossbar more than once, but none ever made it into the goal. With less than 14 minutes to play, Canyon Randall pulled even off of a partially deflected awkward cross. The ball went sky-high before dropping into the box. A miscommunication saw the ball into the goal.

Not even five minutes later, the Maidens had a penalty called on them just outside the box. Canyon Randall laid in a beautiful cross that was headed into the net. The Lady Raiders took the lead with eight minutes to go. Lake View had one final opportunity to score, but again, the ball went off the crossbar, and Canyon Randall took home the victory 3-2.

After the game, Head Coach Henry Gonzales had nothing but great things to say about his team.

The No. 23 Lake View Maidens end their season with a 17-4-1 overall record. They went 11-1 in their district, claimed the outright district championship, and the Bi-District championship over El Paso Irvin last week in Andrews. These ladies have nothing to hang their heads about as they made their community proud and brought home some serious hardware back to Lake View High School.

The Central Bobcats ladies soccer fell to Southlake Carroll 4-0 Wednesday night in the Area round in Georgetown.
