ANDREWS, TX — The San Angelo Central Lady Cats faced off against the El Paso Eastwood Lady Troopers on Thursday night, March 23, for the first round of the Texas UIL High School Soccer Playoffs in Andrews at 7 p.m.
The Lady Cats dominated possession throughout the contest, but the Lady Troopers performed valiantly on defense. After Eastwood thwarted more than 10 of the Lady Cats' shots on goal in the first half, Central finally broke through the stalwart defense in the second to claim victory 2-1.
Blustery gusts dominated the first half in Andrews, and luckily for the Lady Cats, they chose the right direction to attack. Although they had the wind at their backs throughout the first half, none of their shots turned into points.
“At halftime, we were a little discouraged because when you usually have the wind, and you don’t get anything out of it, things usually don’t go too well,” Head Coach Henry said.
“We knew we would do better in the second half with some through balls put in. I felt that girls played with a lot of heart,” he continued. “They had a good shape, especially defensively. I felt like we put a lot of pressure on them like we needed to.”
Of course, he called it correctly, as the Lady Cats finally broke through Eastwood’s defense in the second half. Carley Martinez struck first for Central in the opening minutes, and Captain Lexi Templin added another right around the 60th minute to put the Lady Cats up 2-0.
Central’s defense stepped up after their two scores and stopped whatever the Lady Troopers threw at them. However, with just under two minutes to play, Eastwood finally scored. The Lady Troopers took a shot from just inside the box that nailed the inside corner of the left post, just inside the line. The Ladies held on for the final minute to claim victory 2-1.
After the game, Coach Henry spoke at length about his senior class. Check out the entire interview here.
The Lady Cats claim a Bi-District Championship and continue their playoff journey next week in the Area Round. They come up against the defending state champions and No.1 ranked South Lake Carrol Lady Dragons, who beat Weatherford on Thursday night, 10-0. Central has a tough test ahead of them, but Coach Henry said that they never want to face anything but the best come playoff time. The date, time, and location for the matchup are still to be determined.
