SAN ANGELO, TX — The Little Southwest Conference dropped their All-district 2-6A Honors on Wednesday, March 1. Several of the Central Bobcats made the list.
NEWCOMER OF THE YEAR - Christian “Squeaky” English, Sophmore
This season, Squeaky was an absolute force for the Bobcats with his brother Jacob. The young guard helped lead the offense every game this season and dropped 30 points against Midland High in a win-or-go-home scenario to make the playoffs. The young man has a bright future and should lead Bobcats to greater heights over the next two seasons.
1st Team All-District
- Jacob English, Senior
- English was one of the scoring leaders this year for the Bobcats. His ability to shoot the deep ball and drive to the basket gave Central a chance to win several games. His highlight reel dunks electrified the crowd several times, and his leadership on the court was second to none. With his prowess on the gridiron and the hardwood, we should prepare to see more of English at the collegiate level.
- Kollin Allbright, Junior
- The 6’9” Junior dominated the paint on both offense and defense all season long for the Bobcats. Allbright constantly found himself either leading Central in scoring or in a close second. Allbright's presence inside was an intimidating force throughout the year, and the Junior should be even more dominant next year.
2nd Team All-District
- Jacoby Yates, Senior
- Yates added to his ever-growing list of accolades earned this season with the 2nd team nod. Reminiscent of someone like Steve Nash, Yates's ability to drive the basketball, draw in the defense, and then dish to open shooters led the Bobcats. His explosiveness and quickness made him a nightmare for opposing guards on defense. His ability to play full-court press against the fastest guards in the district opened up many options for Central this year.
- Jaedyn Gipson, Senior
- Gipson was the rock this season that held this team together. Consistently in the top three in scoring all season for the Bobcats, Gipson’s presence on the court was unmistakable. He had a knack for snagging an offensive rebound off the rim and putting the ball through the net. His senior highlight has to be against the, at the time, undefeated Frenship Tigers. He grabbed an offensive rebound from a missed Jacob English three and put the ball into the net as time expired in overtime to give the ‘Cats the win.
- Dre Young, Senior
- One of Central’s best defenders, no one looked forward to going against Young on his end of the court. His jumping ability was second to none this year, and he led the Bobcats in rebounds in several games this season. When Coach Villegas needed a stop, Dre Young came into the game. His physicality was always a nightmare for the opposition to deal with inside.
Honorable Mention
- Hayden Schmidt, Junior
- The Bobcats ace from beyond the arc this year, Schmidt’s above-average 3-point percentage kept the ‘Cats in more than one game this season. Fearless against closing defenders, Schmidt never failed to find his spot and hit “the clutch shot.” While not as flashy as the English brothers or as domineering as Allbright or Young, Hayden quietly found significant playing time with a talented Central squad.
Academic All-Sate
Several of the Bobcats also made the list in Academics. With an athlete’s schedule, it can be hard at times to balance sports with the work done in the classroom. Making this list shows diligence, responsible decision-making, and responsibility.
