STAMFORD, TX — The City View Mustangs put an end to the Wall Hawk’s playoff run in a tight game in Stamford on Friday night.
Despite making four three-point shots in the final quarter, the Hawks lost to a very good Mustang team 55-47. Wall All-Star Everson Armstrong put up 19 points with several other Hawks making threes throughout the game.
The first quarter scoring was close with the Mustangs holding a two-point lead at the buzzer of 15-13. City View’s Kendrick Gibson added five points while sophomore Brian Williams sank a three-pointer. Add shots from three others and the Mustangs put up 15. The Hawks’ Armstrong hit three two-point shots while Augden Hallmark added five points and Brylan White put two up on the scoreboard to get the Hawks to 13.
Into the second quarter, Wall’s Hallmark and Logan Thomas added nine points to the Hawks total while City View had three different players, Jude York, Williams, and Jaleel Thomas hit three three-point shots and William Jordan added four.
The Mustangs led the Hawks 28-22 at halftime.
The Hawks pulled within five during the third quarter. Wall’s Jack Duncan, plus Thomas and Armstrong put up 11 points in the opening of the second half to City View’s 10 points. Gibson hit another three-point shot and Williams and Jordan added two and five respectively.
Within two shots heading into the fourth, Armstrong and the Hawks added 14 points including those nine from Armstrong and three from Duncan. Lane Stansberry also put up two points.
City View did damage from the free throw line in the fourth, going 8 of 11 from the line. Jacobe Monroe also added five, a two and three-pointer, and Jordan and Thomas added four combined which put City View’s fourth quarter total at 17 points.
In the end, the Hawk’s playoff run ended in the second round of the 2023 playoffs with a score of 55-47. Wall was defeated by the first seed and 17th ranked City View Mustangs.
More news from the Concho Valley is that the Brady Bulldogs, who sent shockwaves through West Texas after beating San Angelo TLCA in the Bi-District round on Tuesday, also lost. Brady was defeated by the 25th ranked Vernon Lions 67-37.
