COVER1 Hoops: Concho Valley Playoffs

SAN ANGELO, TX — Few teams from the Concho Valley remain as we approach the end of high school basketball playoffs, but still, several teams saw action on Thursday night, and more still play on Friday. Here are the results and matchups for this weekend.

Thursday, Feb. 23

BOYS 1A

IRION COUNTY 61 SANDERSON 38

The no. 4 Hornets played in Fort Stockton Thursday for the Area Round. Irion County got off to a sluggish start in the first half, with Sanderson keeping it close and even tied the game at the end of the second quarter. However, Bo Morrow’s and Trevin Coffell’s 23 points a piece took over in the second half to secure the victory. Sanderson could not match up with the Hornets once they got into foul trouble, and Irion County won 61-38. Irion County plays Buena Vista in the Regional Quarterfinal next week.

ROBERT LEE 40 BUENA VISTA 52

The Steers and the Longhorns clashed in their Area Round matchup on Thursday night. The game remained close throughout, and regulation was not enough to decide a winner. In the overtime period, Beuna Vista steadily pulled away to defeat the Steers 52-40. Beuna Vista plays No. 4 Irion County in the Regional Quarterfinal next week.

BOYS 2A

CHRISTOVAL 67 WINK 63 OT

For the second playoff game in a row, the Christoval Cougars had to win their game in overtime. Although the Cougars led late in the second half, Wink made two crucial free throws to tie the score and send the game to an extra period. In overtime, Jaron Slayton took control of the offense and scored on a drive with less than a minute to go to put the Cougars up by four points. Wink had one more opportunity on offense but failed to score. Christoval advanced to the Regional Quarterfinal and will play No. 5 New Home next week.

STERLING CITY 41 NO. 5 NEW HOME 71

The New Home Leopards proved why they are ranked No. 5 in the state on Thursday night in Lamesa. Despite how hard the Sterling City Eagles played, New Home never trailed in the contest. Sterling City had a great season overall, claiming their fourth straight Bi-District Championship earlier in the week. New Home will play Christoval in the Regional Quarterfinals next week.

MILES 45 PLAINS 55

The Bulldogs failed to advance past the Area Round when they fell to Plains on Thursday night. Regardless of the outcome, Miles had another good showing this season, claiming a district and a bi-district championship.

GIRLS 1A REGIONAL SEMIFINALS

NO. 6 VERIBEST VS HIGHLAND

The Veribest Lady Falcons play their Regional Semifinal matchup against the Highland Lady Hornets on Friday, Feb. 24, in Snyder at 4 p.m. Highland beat their district rivals, Westbrook, to get into the Regional tournament. Veribest plays incredibly disciplined basketball, and these ladies have a good shot at winning on Friday.

IRION COUNTY VS NO. 12 HERMLEIGH

The Lady Hornets play Hermleigh in the Regional Semifinals on Friday, Feb. 24, in Snyder at 6 p.m. This will be the toughest test of the post-season so far, but if Irion County can manage this win, they get a chance at their district rival in the Regional Final.

GIRLS 3A REGIONAL SEMIFINALS

NO. 2 JIM NED VS IDALOU

The Jim Ned Lady Indians play the Idalou Lady Wildcats at Frenship High School on Friday at 8 p.m.

BOYS 1A

The Bronte Longhorns play their Area Round matchup against Van Horn on Friday in Monahans at 7 p.m.

2A

NO. 4 REAGAN COUNTY VS SEAGRAVES

The Reagan County Owls take on Seagraves on Friday at 6:30 p.m. in Stanton

3A

WALL VS NO. 17 CITY VIEW

The Hawks have a difficult matchup in front of them on Friday in Stamford when they play City View at 6:30. Wall needs to lean heavily on their defense to keep the game low scoring. Everson Armstrong needs the ball in his hands, whether by shooting or driving into the paint. Even if City View crashes to the inside to stop Armstrong, open looks to Augden Hallmark shoot come open from beyond the arc.

BRADY VS NO. 25 VERNON

Brady travels to Anson on Friday to play Vernon at 8 p.m. After their wild victory versus the TLCA Eagles earlier in the week, the Brady Bulldogs are riding high. No. 25 Vernon could be a nasty reality check if these Bulldogs do not come prepared. They need to have the same strategy as they had against the Eagles if they want to win. They have to slow the game down and force Vernon to play their game of basketball.

JIM NED VS BOWIE

The Jim Ned Indians play the Bowie Jackrabbits in Stephenville at 6:30 p.m.

6A

ODESSA PERMIAN VS KELLER

The Permian Panthers take on the Keller Indians at Clyde High School on Friday at 7:30 p.m.

FRENSHIP VS CHISHOLM TRAIL

The Tigers play Chisholm Trail on Friday at Abilene Wylie High School at 6 p.m.

ODESSA HIGH VS NORTH CROWLEY

The Bronchos play North Crowley on Friday at Abilene Wylie High School at 8 p.m.
