SAN ANGELO— The Irion County Lady Hornets stung the Rankin Lady Red Devils in the Area Round of the Texas High School Girls’ Basketball Playoffs at Lake View on Friday, February 17, 2023.
The Lady Hornets are moving on after defeating the Lady Red Devils in the Area Round Friday night 61-37, led by Senior KK Hart’s 17 points. The Lady Red Devils wouldn’t go down without a fight, despite what the final score was, as Taylor Ramos and Madison Jenkins put up 30 points combined.
Speaking of 17 points, that was the amount Irion County put up in the first quarter to Rankin’s eight. Junior Taylor Ramos put up six of the Lady Red Devil’s eight points in the opening frame. Hart, as well as sophomores Berkley Callaway, Acelyn Fowler, and sisters, freshman Baylee Rainey and junior Melanie Rainey, scored Irion County’s first points.
Into the second quarter, the Lady Hornets didn’t let off the gas and put up another 17 points. Senior Audrey Tillman joined the score sheet with six points. Melanie Rainey hit a three-point shot while Hart and Fowler each scored two points.
Rankin saw the free throw line often in the second quarter, being near perfect making six of eight free throws. Senior point guard Madison Jenkins scored six points, sinking one three-pointer, a two pointer, and a free throw. Ramos made five of six free throws in the second which made the halftime score 34-19 in the Lady Hornet’s favor.
Into the second half, Irion County’s Hart went off and added nine points to Irion County's total, draining one three-point shot in the process. Melanie Rainey and Callaway each sank threes as well with Rainey going to the free throw line four times, putting up three points.
The Lady Red Devil’s added eighteen points in the third and fourth quarters. Senior Alexis Cura hit two three-point shots and Jenkins made six points, one three, one two, and one free throw.
When it was all said and done, the Irion County Lady Hornets were victorious over the Rankin Lady Red Devils 61-37 and are moving on to play the Eden Lady Bulldogs in the Regional Qualifier Round.
