Final Minute of Wall/TLCA 1 Point Championship Game

SAN ANGELO— Two high school basketball juggernauts battled for the district championship last night in San Angelo and it ended being a one point game.

In the district finale, the Travis Dawson led Wall Hawks took on the Kent Sherrill led TLCA Eagles for the district championship. Up until last week, TLCA, Wall, and Jim Ned were in a three-way tie for first place. On Friday, the Hawks beat Jim Ned and needed a win to secure the district.

Wall came out fast and focused against the Eagles, putting up 24 points to TLCA’s 11. In the second quarter, the Hawks continued to put points up faster than the Eagles and at the half, Wall led 24-18.

It really was a tale of two halves as Wall’s points dropped in each quarter to the point where shots weren’t falling for them hardly at all. Combined, the Hawks put up 10 points after putting up over double that in the first half.

TLCA, who took their lumps moving up to 3A ball, never gave up, and put 16 points on the board in the second half.

Things got pretty crazy in the final minutes of the game. TLCA, down just one point, played keep away for a while time was running out. Trying to put up the last points of the game, TLCA’s Jaidden Villanueva, sank a two-point shot with just under 15 seconds left in the game.

Wall attempted to inbound the ball from under the opposite basketball. Hawk All-Star Everson Armstrong tossed the ball into Logan Thomas, who passed it right back. Armstrong drove to the basket but missed the layup. The ball ended up in TLCA’s possession, but Armstrong knocked it away from Villanueva and out of bounds.

Again, things were crazy at this point and the refs put .5 seconds back on the clock. TLCA’s Drew Sherrill went under the basket to inbound the ball, which Wall took possession of and called the fastest timeout that’s ever existed.

In a last-ditch effort, Wall tossed the ball up at the basket in hopes of tipping the ball in but TLCA wouldn’t have it.

TLCA ended up winning 35-34 over the Wall Hawks and just found a way to win.

Eagles’ coach Kent Sherill spoke after the game.

TLCA will take on Brady in the opening round and Wall plays Ingram Moore.
