CHRISTOVAL— The Christoval Cougars and Lady Cougars both earned big district wins last night over Sterling City.
The Lady Cougars hosted the Lady Eagles last night and ended the first half of district play with a win. They’re currently 6-1 in district play and now will begin the second half on a three-game winning streak.
Up 11-2 in the closing minutes of the first quarter, the Lady Cougars started to let the Lady Eagles back in the game. The opening quarter ended with Christoval up 13-8. The possibility of an Eagle comeback dissolved in the second quarter.
Both teams went off in the second with Christoval’s Madison George and Sterling City’s Mia Garcia scoring 10 points each.
The difference? Christoval’s Hughes, Gonzalez, and Workman combined for 14 points where Sterling City’s Gaines, Helms, and McPherson combined for six. Christoval was up at halftime 37-24.
Into the third quarter disaster almost struck when the Lady Cougars were called for a technical foul. After speaking to the refs, players are not allowed to clap at officials in frustration. Sterling City was able to sink two of the free throws with made the score 43-28. Going into the fourth quarter, Christoval was firmly out in front 56-30.
In the final quarter, Christoval’s Aaliyah Bogs drained two three-point shots while Hughes and George added on eight and four respectively. Garcia for the Lady Eagles scored the only points for Sterling City in the fourth with seven. Christoval ended up winning 75-57.

“That was the team we wanted to beat.” Lady Cougars Head Coach Brady Clark said, “We got out fast, we hit some shots, a lot of players contributed. It felt good to see that team show up today.”
This is Coach Clark’s first time in Christoval but it is his first time as the Lady Cougar’s head coach.
“It’s a dream come true, just God’s plan always out,” Clark said, “Came here as an assistant, the San Angelo area is our home, couple years ago, stays for two years, learned a lot and kind of fell in love with the community. The community here is second to none, kids are second to none, parents are second to none.”
His team certainly is, and they play are for him. Madyson George and Halle Hughes, the lead scorers for the Lady Cougars, both seemed to be enjoying themselves throughout the night. “It’s nice,” Hughes said on being a top scorer.”
“It feels pretty good,” George said, “it means he (Clark) trusts us.”
The Lady Cougars start the second half of district against the Reagan County Lady Owls this coming Tuesday in Christoval. The Lady Cougars are 14-11 overall, 6-1 in district while the Lady Owls are 9-12 overall, 0-5 in district.
