Irion County Wins Decisively to Advance to the 3rd Round

SONORA, TX — The Irion County Hornets (11-0) dismantled the Leakey Eagles (6-6) Thursday night, Nov. 18, in the second round of the UIL Texas High School Football Playoffs 1-A Six Man in Sonora at 6:00 p.m. The Hornets beat the Eagles back in September 61-6, and the outcome did not change. The Eagles put up a fight, but Irion County claimed victory 52-0.

After forcing a punt on Leakey’s first possession, the Hornets wasted little time getting on the board. The Hornets’ Brayden Paiz snapped a long run to the Eagles’ 20-yard line. Irion County scored on a 20-yard rushing touchdown on the next play and led early, 6-0.

Hornets’ Trevin Cofell and Bo Morrow connected on several touchdowns throughout the first half. First, Coffell connected with Morrow for the game’s second touchdown to make the game 14-0.

After an interception on defense, Coffell threw two straight passes to Morrow to get into the endzone again. The quarterback-wide receiver connection would put the game out of reach before the end of the 1st half. As the 1st quarter came to a close, the Hornets led 37-0.

The points came fast for the Hornets because they played solid defense. Falling behind in the game forced Leakey to continue to go for it on 4th down. However, Irion County’s defense stopped them time and time again. As a result, the Hornets, more often than not, started in the Eagles’ territory.

Irion County’s Jordan Harrison kicked off the 2nd quarter with a rushing touchdown. Trevin Coffell then threw another touchdown pass later in the quarter to make the game 52-0; that is where the score stayed. Leakey had one final opportunity to get the score within 45 points, but the Hornets’ defense proved too strong.

By rule in UIL 6-man football, if one team falls behind by 45 points or more in the 2nd half, then the game is over. The Irion County Hornets won decisively, 52-0.

The Hornets will face the winner of the Medina Bobcats (11-0) and the Jonesboro Eagles (11-1) in the quarterfinals of the state tournament.
