SAN ANGELO – The third-ranked Angelo State University football team kept up it's winning ways on Saturday, defeating Eastern New Mexico 28-9 at LeGrand Stadium at 1st Community Credit Union field. With the win, the Rams improve to 6-0 overall and 4-0 in Lone Star Conference action.
ASU tallied 417 yards of total offense on the day, holding ENMU to only 207 yards, including 82 yards through the air.
The Greyhounds scored first, jumping a pass on ASU's first drive before returning the interception for a score to go up 6-0 after missing the extra point.
ASU answered back later, driving the ball 63 yards before Zach Bronkhorst connected with Noah Massey for a touchdown, giving the Rams a 7-6 advantage.
In the next possession for the Greyhounds, ASU's DeShaun Douglas intercepted a deep pass down the sideline, setting up a 41-yard touchdown pass to Rasheen Green as the Rams began to pull away in the game.
Towards the end of the first quarter, the Rams forced another punt before driving through the air again. Bronkhorst hit Nate Omayebu III for a 31-yard gain before finding Kel Williams in the corner of the endzone for a score from 19-yards out.
Bronkhorst finished 14-for-31 passing on the night, totaling 248 yards and four touchdowns.
With the first half coming to a close, ENMU completed a 46-yard pass to get into ASU territory for the first time, settling for a field goal to make it 21-9 at the break.
ASU's defense finished the game with three takeaways, intercepting one ball while forcing two fumbles. Micah Flowers was the leading tackler for ASU, tallying 11 tackles while Eric Rascoe added nine.
After trading possessions to begin the third quarter, Bronkhorst tallied his fourth touchdown pass, hitting Matthew Carter on an 11-yard pass to make it a 19-point lead for the Rams.
Kason Philips and Omayebu led the Rams in rushing with 69 and 65 yards respectively while Massey was the leading receiver with 52 yards on four catches.
The Rams will go back on the road next week as they travel to Western New Mexico for an LSC contest on Saturday, Oct. 15.
