DETROIT, MI- The 2022 NFL Draft starts tonight and for the first time in two years, the two Texas teams both have picks in the opening round.
The Dallas Cowboys currently hold the 24th pick and after free agency, have several holes in the roster. Dallas needs help at interior offensive line, defensive line, linebacker, secondary, and wide receiver.
The Cowboys did not address the interior offensive line during free agency after losing guard Conner Williams to the Miami Dolphins. Dallas has been a popular spot for Texas A&M’s guard Kenyon Green and Boston College’s Zion Johnson.
Other offensive players they could consider are wide receivers. At one time, the Cowboys had arguable the best wide receiver rooms in the NFL between Amari Cooper, Michael Gallup, CeeDee Lamb, and Cedrick Wilson. Since then, the Cowboys traded Cooper to the Browns and Wilson signed with Miami. This could make Penn State’s Jahan Dotson a Cowboy if they choose to add to the offensive firepower.
Defensively, the Cowboys have recently been the subject to rumors of trading up in the draft and taking a sliding defensive end. Oregon’s Kayvon Thibodeaux has been at the center of this kind of talk. Also on the defensive side, linebackers Nakobe Dean from Georgia and Devin Lloyd from Utah make sense as the Cowboys are thin at that position as well. To keep offensive coordinators up at night trying to determine where 2021 first round pick Micah Parsons is coming from, linebacker could very well be addressed early.
The Houston Texans that currently hold the 3rd and 13th overall selections and 5 selections in the top 80 picks.
The Texans traded DeShaun Watson to the Cleveland Browns for a King’s Ransom but new Head Coach Lovie Smith has said he wants to build around current quarterback Davis Mills.
Over the last few seasons, the Texans have lost J.J. Watt and Jadeveon Clowney. At 3, they could add one of the top defensive ends in the draft to help recapture some sacks as they were 5th worst in the NFL last season. One of the top 2 or 3 defensive guys could be too good to pass up.
If they do choose to get Mills as much help as possible, they could go offensive line. Alabama’s Evan Neal and North Carolina State’s Ikem Ekwonu.
At 13, they could add a pass catcher like Ohio State’s Garrett Wilson or Alabama’s Jameson Williams or trade out altogether. There have been reports of the Texans being active with draft day trades and it wouldn’t be a bad thing if you want to add more picks for future drafts.
