Former Baylor Star Detained in Russia on Drug Charges

MOSCOW, RUSSIA- Former Baylor basketball star Brittney Griner has been detained in Russia on drug charges.

Griner played for Baylor from 2009-2013 and helped the Lady Bears win the 2012 National Championship. She was the top overall selection in the 2013 WNBA draft picked by the Phoenix Mercury. Brittney has been playing in Russia during the winter months due to the salary offered.

Griner was detained at the Sheremetyevo Airport close to Moscow for allegedly having hashish oil vape cartridges inside her luggage. She was arriving in Russia from New York.

The airport screening happened in February and Griner’s agent has issued this statement:

“We are aware of the situation with Brittney Griner in Russia and are in close contact with her, her legal representation in Russia, her family, her teams, and the WNBA and NBA. A this is an ongoing legal matter, we are not able to comment further on the specifics of her case but can confirm that as we work to get her home, her mental and physical health remain our primary concern.”

The 2-time Olympic Gold Medalist could face 5-10 years if found guilty.
