SAN ANGELO – The San Angelo Ironclad came out in full force this weekend at the San Angelo Comic Con.
First thing, what is the San Angelo Ironclad. According to their Facebook page they are the premier live steel fighting sport group of the Concho Valley and apart of Armored Combat Worldwide.
The Facebook admin, Anton Zemlock spoke about the San Angelo Ironclad.
“We’re an international, full contact, fighting organization,” Anton Zemlock said, “We have a chapter here in San Angelo where we train a couple times a week, in and out of armor.”
The Ironclad were just that, decked out in full, detailed, knight armor and armed with real swords and fully aware that it will get use.
“We make our own armor. It’s full contact fighting with blunted weapons, all out.” Zemlock said. At the San Angelo Comic Con, the Ironclad had a “Fight a Knight” which for $5.00, you could spar with a fully armored knight.
Also, this is not just a hobby for people who may be interested, it’s a sport.
“This is more like a sports league. We have tournaments all over the United States, east coast to west coast.” Said Zemlock, “Our nationals, for example, is going to be in Salt Lake City, Utah here in April.”
Remember, it’s not just a United States organization, it’s international.
Zemlock said, “We’re going to Tennessee in April to compete and try and go fight in Finland.”
This is a passion for people, go get involved in a sport your heart has to be in it.
“I’ve always liked doing the knight thing. I grew up with the whole Star Wars and The Boy with the Sword kind of thing, “Anton said, “That’s always drawn me to it. I’ve been fighting for almost 30 years.”
With San Angelo being a growing city, just how popular is the Ironclad?
“For such a relatively small town compared to like a Dallas or Houston, we have a really strong chapter here with a lot of support and a lot of good fighters” Zemlock said.
