NFL Story Lines: Former Head Coach Sues NFL for Racial Discrimination

MIAMI, FL – The National Football League has a few notable stories this week including a former head coach suing the NFL, a historic franchise is up for sale, and Washington has settled on a name.

First things first, former Dolphin head coach Brian Flores has filed a class action race discrimination lawsuit against the NFL alleging teams would bring him in to interview even though they already had their minds made up about who they were going to hire.

The Rooney Rule was introduced to the NFL in 2003. This rule requires teams to interview minority coaching candidates and front office personnel. If a team had a head coaching vacancy, they had to interview at least one minority candidate before filling the position.

Brian Flores comes from the Bill Belichick coaching tree and texts were send from Belichick congratulating Flores on getting the New York Giants head coaching job. Only, Flores had yet to be interviewed by the Giants and Belichick had texted the wrong “Brian” as New York had already made up their minds on hired Bills offensive coordinator Brian Daboll.

The texts from Belichick were sent on January 24th, two days before Flores would interview. Flores would end up interviewing knowing he was not going to get the job.

Brian Flores said, “God has gifted me with a special talent to coach the game of football, but the need for change is bigger than my personal goals. In making the decision to file the class action complaint today, I understand that I may be risking coaching the game that I love and that has done so much for my family and me. My sincere hope is that by standing up against systemic racism in the NFL, others will join me to ensure that positive change is made for generations to come.”

Flores became the head coach of the Miami Dolphins in 2019 and was fired this offseason after back-to-back winning seasons, the first time the ‘Fins have had consecutive winning seasons since 2003. Flores’ overall record was 24-25.

Over his career with the Dolphins, Flores also alleges that owner Steven Ross had a meeting on his yacht to discuss Tom Brady possibly becoming the next quarterback of the Miami Dolphins. This would be tampering under NFL rule. Flores also has said that Ross offered to pay him $100,000.00 to lose games in 2019 to improve draft position. 2019 was the year Joe Burrow was drafted 1st overall.

The suit names the National Football League, and the New York Giants, the Miami Dolphins, and the Denver Broncos organizations.

Possibly the second biggest news in the NFL is the Washington Football Team is no more as the franchise has finally settled on a name. The Washington Football Team will be now known as the Washington Commanders.

The team formerly known as the Washington Redskins dropped the “Redskins” name under pressure from corporate sponsors.

Washington had several different names thrown around like the Red Wolves, the Admirals, and the Red Tail.

Lastly, the Denver Broncos are up for sale.

Pat Bowlen bought the Broncos in 1984 and he ceded control of the team in the summer of 2014 when Bowlen was suffering from Alzheimer’s disease. Bowlen passed away at age 75 in 2019.

Now the Pat Bowlen Trust has put the team up for sale and is projected to go for just under $4 billion. The last team sold

Last season, the Broncos went 7-10 which caused a change at the head coaching position. New head coach Nathaniel Hackett came in from the Green Bay Packers to improve the offense which finished 14th overall.
