Houston Texans Part Ways with Superstar Watt

HOUSTON,TX- The Houston Texans announced Friday the team has released JJ Watt.

The pro bowl defensive end was the 11th overall pick in the 2011 NFL Draft, has been with the Houston Texans his entire NFL career. He was drafted out of Wisconsin.

Over his career, Watt was a 5 time pro bowler, 5 time First-Team All Pro, and 3 time Defensive Player of the year along with many other accolades.

The most impressive might be his Walter Payton Man of the Year Award he received after Hurricane Harvey decimated Houston and the Texas coast. Watt helped raise $37 million to help the area get back on its feet. The goal was $200,000.00.

With the funds raised, over 1,000 homes and 971 childcare centers were built and over 237 million meals were distributed to hurricane victims.

In 2014, Watt signed a contract extension for 6 years/$100 million. That season JJ played in 16 games and recorded 20.5 sacks. In 2015, Watt collected 17.5 sacks and 29 tackles for loss despite a fractured left hand and a groin injury.

The next 2 seasons for the defensive lineman were derailed by injury. Watt had back surgery for a herniated disk in 2016 and in 2017 had suffered a season ending leg injury after only 5 games.

2019 was the same story as JJ ended up on injured reserve after a season ending pectoral tear.

JJ Watt played the entire 2020 season and wasn’t the same player. He had 5 sacks and 14 tackles for loss in 16 games.

Watt will be a free agent in the coming offseason which means he will be able to sign with any team he wants.
