SAN ANGELO, TX – Rumors spread by a newspaper may have spoiled San Angelo's chance of hosting a Texas High School Football State Championship game.
The Balmorhea Bears and the Richland Springs Coyotes were set to face off in the 1A state championships on Dec. 15 until a coronavirus outbreak forced the teams to postpone the game.
The UIL has given teams until Jan. 16 to play the championship game. The teams must pick a neutral site to play the game.
On. Dec. 18 the San Angelo Standard Times reported that this game would be played at 6 p.m. Tuesday, Jan. 5, 2021, at San Angelo Stadium. The paper sourced the news off of a tweet by Leman Saunders. Saunders' twitter feed states he is a Six-Man Football Expert.
This was the original tweet that was later deleted.
Following this tweet, other six-man news outlets began searching. Sixmania tweeted this as a response.
Saunders did accept the fact check and reported that this game is still pending.
The head coach of Balmorhea, Coach Vance Jones, has clarified that the target date will be the Jan. 5 but that all depends on if the kids are healthy enough to play.
If this game takes place it will more than likely be played at San Angelo Stadium.
