Winters ISD Becomes First Big Country School District to Suspend Summer Workouts

WINTERS, TX –  Winters ISD athletic director Matt McCarty canceled all workout sessions for students throughout the remainder of this week on Tuesday morning following a rise of confirmed coronavirus cases across the state over the weekend.

Although McCarty confirmed there have not been any positive cases of the coronavirus related to the school district or any athletes participating in summer strength and conditioning workouts on campus, but that the decision was made in an "abundance of caution" by district officials even though no staff or students have shown any symptoms of COVID-19.

On Sunday, the Runnels County Sheriff's Office posted on it's Facebook page there were 5 confirmed cases inside of the city limits of Winters, including one case outside of the city limits.

However, according to the Johns Hopkins COVID-19 Tracker Runnels County currently has just three confirmed cases at this time.

Roughly 50 junior high and high school students have been regularly taking part in the voluntary summer workouts on campus at Winters ISD after the UIL allowed schools to host summer strength and conditioning, and marching band practices beginning June 8.

McCarty said Winters ISD administration has been in consistent communication with the county health administrator as the district plans to resume summer workouts on June 29 although the current situation is fluid.
