SAN ANGELO, TX – One of Angelo State University's top athletes added another medal to his trophy case after he was name the Lone Star Conference Male Athletic Performer of the year.
The coronavirus cut the season short for sports around the world and Angelo State Baseball was one of them. The team had high hopes for the season being 19-3 and the number one ranked team in the nation but on March 8 they played the last game of their season.
Even though the team didn't get to try their luck at a national championship, Team Captain and now All-American Josh Elvir captured his second consecutive LSC Male Performance Athlete of the Year.
"I feel extremely blessed just due to the fact that I’ve worked so hard to get to the point that I’m at now," said Elvir. "It’s really rewarding to see that all my hard work is paying off! I can’t thank my coaches and my teammates enough for the help that they have given me along this journey."
Elvir played right field for the Rams for the past two seasons. This past year he hit a .438 with 30 RBI's and eleven Home Runs. He finished the season in the field with only one error which was in the second game of the season. They won that game 26-3.
The Major League Baseball commissioner Rob Manfred have temporarily suspended all baseball operation so the future of any senior athlete is up in the air.
"I would love to continue playing baseball for as long as I can. However, my future in baseball is something that I can only control so much of." said Elvir "All I can really do at this point with the Coronavirus going around is to continue to master my craft as much as possible and then just hope and pray that someone will give me a chance to continue playing baseball."
