ASU Belles Win Lone Star Conference Tournament Over Tarleton State

SAN ANGELO, TX — The Angelo State Belles showed their championship mettle in last Saturday’s Lone Star Conference Championship volleyball game.

The Belles went back and forth with rival Tarleton State in the first set and took a breather after pulling out a close 25-21 win.  The momentum shifted heavily in the Texans’ favor in the next two sets as ASU tried to stay with them. At one point in the second set, TSU was up 21-13.  The two teams would trade points after that, giving TSU the 25-18 victory.

The third set played out nearly identically to the second.  TSU jumped out to a 15-8 lead before winning 25-21. ASU was on the verge of defeat but jumped into another gear when they needed to.

In the fourth set, a flurry of points behind server Lindsay Ledyard propelled them to a 14-4 lead.  They would not look back and won 25-11 to force a fifth set. TSU could not overcome the Belles resurgence and All-Tournament MVP Sundara Chinn put the final nail in the coffin with the game ending kill.  The set ended 15-8.

This marks ASU’s tenth Lone Start Conference Championship title in school history and gives the Belles an impressive 28-2 record for the season.  They also now have an automatic bid in the NCAA D2 South Regional Tournament which starts Thursday, December 5.

The NCAA will announce the time, location, and opponent for their round one game Monday evening at 6:30.

Besides the tremendous team accomplishment, three ASU players were recognized for their individual performances.  Sophomore Makenna Hanssen and junior Baleigh Allen were named to the All-Tournament Team. Senior Sundara Chinn was named the tournament’s Most Valuable Player in addition to being on the All-Tournament Team.
