CISCO, TX -- The Wall Hawks survived the turnover bug Friday night and became Bi-District Champions by beating the Boyd Yellow Jackets 32-7.
Wall started out with the ball in the first quarter and with their backup backfield took it all the way down into the Yellow Jackets territory but fumbled. Boyd started with the ball on their 41 yard line with 8:53 in the first.
Boyd took the ball with starting QB Rendyn Lamance and ran it for two huge plays but were unsuccessful with getting points after a late fourth down sack by the Hawk defense.
This drive was much like the opening for the Hawks. They started on their own 27 yard line and made huge plays with QB Drew Morrison and RB Bryson Ballard. Ultimately though the Hawks turned the ball over in enemy territory again. This gave Boyd the ball on their own 16 with 3:29 left in the first.
This time Boyd was able to take advantage of the turnover. They drove the ball for 84-yards in under three minutes by Lamance finding WR Brain Couture for a 33-yard passing touchdown. This gave Boyd the lead at the end of the first 7-0.
Coming into the second quarter, Walls offense continued to look bugged from turnover after #12 fumbles again. They ended up getting on top of this one which kept the drive alive. It also gave them the opportunity to score a touchdown with Morrison running in a one yard quarterback keeper. This tied the game 7-7 with 7:08 left in the second quarter.
Not four plays later the Hawk defense got their first turnover of the night. Boyd’s Lamance fumbled on their own 35-yard line. Wall’s DL Stuart Bugmann scooped up the fumble and took it back and took the lead. Wall’s kicker hit the right up-right which brought the lead to 13-7.
The following drive for Boyd was long due to an unsportsmanlike conduct penalty against the Hawks on third and long followed by a passing interference. The drive was saved by a yellow jacket holding penalty and an incompletion of fourth down. This brought the score at halftime to 13-7.
The third quarter was filled with long drives by each team. Both teams just touched the ball one time and were unable to score. The score at the end of the third was still 13-7.
The fourth was when Wall put the hammer down on both sides. They scored their first Touchdown of the quarter with RB Cinch Dickey. The 15-yard run gave the Hawks a 19-7 lead.
A quick three and out by the Yellow Jackets had Wall with the ball and looking to score with little under 9 minutes left in the game. RB Dominc Garcia punched it in to cap off the drive and make the game 25-7 after a missed two-point conversion.
Lamance, starting QB, for the Yellow Jackets and really their last hope was injured following this drive which led Wall to face a back up. The forced a three and out and got the ball back.
Wall’s final scoring drive came by the Hawk’s running back RB Grady McCrea. The pitch play gave McCrea the speed advantage and put the final nail in the coffin.
